First-time practice owner, NYC·May 15, 2026

Premium consultants and lawyers might not be that premium

One of the harder ownership lessons I've learned so far is that premium dental consultants and lawyers might not be that premium.

I'm currently over a year into trying to open my first practice in NYC, and honestly, this process has humbled me more than dental school ever did.

Like a lot of dentists going into ownership for the first time, I felt confident clinically but intimidated by the startup/business side: site selection, financing, vendors, buildout, permits, contracts, timelines, avoiding expensive mistakes.

Because of that fear, I hired Ideal Practices for roughly $58k total ($49k paid so far). At the time, the logic made complete sense to me: pay experienced people now so I don't pay exponentially more later fixing mistakes I don't even know are coming yet. In my mind, it was essentially an insurance policy against costly delays and bad decisions.

Over time, however, my personal experience didn't fully match the expectation I had going in. Much of what I received consisted of introductions to lenders, vendors, contractors, equipment reps, etc. Helpful? Maybe. But looking back, much of that information was also accessible through networking, colleagues, online research, and asking the right questions.

Where things really unraveled was the property itself. After closing, I learned there were major DOB / Certificate of Occupancy issues tied to the building: open violations dating back decades, unresolved historical items, inability to obtain permits until old issues are resolved. Result: more than a year later, I still haven't been able to begin construction.

Part of why this hit me especially hard is because I also used the dental attorney endorsed by this consulting company for the closing itself. So mentally, I believed I had covered my bases by surrounding myself with experienced people. Instead, I found myself in the exact situation I thought I had paid to help avoid.

To be fair: this is only my experience, others may have had different outcomes.

I attempted to resolve the situation privately and requested a refund minus the portions I believed had clear tangible value, specifically the demographic report and floor plan design. I was ultimately offered a partial refund (~$25k) in exchange for a release agreement and non-disparagement language. I declined the offer because I felt strongly that I should be able to speak honestly about my experience and the lessons I took from it.

There's an entire industry built around fear: fear of...

Save your money — most of this info is free online

I was a recent dental school grad excited about opening my own practice. Ideal Practices targeted me through Instagram ads and webinars. The webinars were great — very motivating and informative. But that's the free stuff.

Once I signed up ($27K for my package), I realized most of the content could be found through ADA resources, SCORE mentoring (free!), and dental-specific Facebook groups. The proprietary 'systems' they talk about are essentially checklists you could create yourself.

The worst part was the pressure to use their preferred vendors for everything — equipment, software, marketing. I later learned they likely receive referral fees from these vendors, which was never disclosed to me.

I dropped out after 6 months and got a partial refund after significant back-and-forth.

Good program but not perfect — helped me open my practice

I went through Ideal Practices in 2022 and opened my practice 14 months later. Overall, I'd say it was a positive experience, though there are areas for improvement.

The step-by-step framework is genuinely helpful if you've never opened a practice before. It takes an overwhelming process and breaks it into manageable steps. The demographic analysis tools they provide are solid.

My coach was responsive and knowledgeable, though I know others had different experiences. I think the quality of coaching varies significantly depending on who you're assigned.

Is it worth $30K? That's debatable. If you're a motivated self-starter who does a lot of research on your own, you might not need it. But if you want a structured path and accountability, it can be valuable.

My honest experience with Ideal Practices and why I regret it

I signed up for Ideal Practices about 2 years ago with high hopes of opening my own startup practice. The initial sales pitch was incredibly compelling — Jayme is a great speaker and really knows how to sell the dream. However, once I was in the program, things started falling apart.

The coaching calls were often generic and didn't address my specific market challenges. When I had issues with my lease negotiation, the advice I received was surface-level at best. I ended up hiring a separate attorney who pointed out several issues the IP team missed.

The cost was significant — I paid around $30K for the program, and that's on top of all the other startup costs. For that price, I expected much more personalized attention.

The Facebook group is active, but it's heavily moderated. Any criticism or negative experiences get removed quickly, which creates a false sense of universal success.

I eventually did open my practice, but I attribute most of my success to my own research, my local dental society connections, and a great accountant — not Ideal Practices.

My Honest Experience with Ideal Practices and Why I Left

I worked at Ideal Practices for 2 years. Initially attracted by the high production numbers and modern offices. However, the corporate pressure to upsell procedures is insane. They push for unnecessary treatments to meet quotas. Pay is commission-based heavily, so if you don't push, you don't earn. Management is distant, all decisions from HQ. Work-life balance is poor with mandatory weekends. Tech is good, but culture is toxic. Left for private practice and never looked back.
